Identum wanted to develop a new part of their existing systems: eHub. It had to be as user-friendly as Google Forms, while being able to connect form fields to their existing database and pull out dynamic data based on rule sets or variables that users could define and manipulate themselves through a function builder.

The points high on the agenda were usability and universal design: EVERYONE should be able to use this portal. During the design process the focus was therefore on hiding complexity, so that the user faces as little as possible on screen at any given time, along with good guidance, an airy design and the use of icons for orientation.

We used principles, layouts and icons that users are already familiar with and have seen many times before. There was also a focus on simplifying the labels and descriptions of elements. The colour palette was put together based on the rest of the system, giving a light expression with soft blue tones and olive green as the primary colour. Animations were composed to make transitions and form building a calm and pleasant experience, and to show the relationships between elements and where they belong.

The brief was to build a modern form builder for the eHub system. The forms had to consist of several pages with different types of elements. Many form elements also had to support function expressions written in a custom language that could call functions nested inside other functions.

We created a modern design for building a form, with drag-and-drop elements for adding new form fields, settings for each type of element, and support for splitting a form across several pages. After approval we built an application based on the design, with all the functionality described above and in collaboration with Identum around an API for saving forms. We developed a dedicated builder for function expressions, with full support for all eHub functions and the ability to nest functions to any depth. The application also renders the form for end users so they can fill it in, and includes a results page that displays submitted forms.
