A focus on diversity in business

Genuine diversity improves company results, strengthens the working environment and opens opportunities for many.

In recent years, the spotlight on genuine diversity in business has grown steadily stronger. Good diversity helps improve company results, strengthen the working environment and open opportunities for many. Diversity is an umbrella term describing human differences both large and small. Those differences are more than gender and ethnicity, which are what most often get noticed when diversity is discussed. Diversity spans age, nationality, sexual orientation, life experience, values, personality, education and differences in ability. Looking deeper at the definition, we can place more weight on the invisible factors: upbringing, socioeconomic status, life experience, values and family circumstances.

Within the tech industry, this opens the door for people who previously did not believe they could enter the field. At Link Utvikling we have partnered with NAV to give a range of people the chance to enter working life. The project is called JobLoop, and it works to prevent exclusion, qualify more people for work and build strong networks and partnerships. At Link Utvikling we have welcomed several young and interesting people who, for different reasons, ended up outside working life. They are now hard at work with us and doing an excellent job with good support from our team. With good communication they gain valuable learning and a solid reference for later in their careers, while we get help with a range of tasks in our daily work. That kind of win-win is both good and essential if our society is to take a real step in the right direction.

Within the ICT sector, the focus on greater diversity in digital industries has grown substantially in recent years. As mentioned, diversity is crucial to success, and that includes a higher share of women among leaders and employees. There are few female founders, a low share of women among employees and even fewer women in leading positions. Research shows that gender balance in companies is good for business. This is something we at Link Utvikling draw a lot of motivation from, since we are two female leaders with great faith in each other and in our company. Within our industry, we firmly believe that hiring people with different backgrounds, educations and values creates a balance that contributes positively to the results of the company.
